The Marvel studio is aware that audiences could be feeling some superhero exhaustion, so they've opted to include that very idea into their next superhero show.
Indeed, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it pledges a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trailer, which premiered on October 10th, also quietly moved the Wonder Man release date later from its initial late 2025 window into January 2026.
Why one more superhero movie? Everyone is weary of superhero content. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man resonated with me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reinvent the whole category of storytelling.
The reporter replies: "Have you given any thought about casting?"
The preview then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the conversation on his mobile device, and the preview ends.
We already knew that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series stars Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a film star who becomes a superhero (Wonder Man).
The supporting cast features actor Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.
We have limited information about the plot of Wonder Man, but it's clear that Marvel plans to poke some fun at itself.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the production company is all in on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? Only time will tell.
