The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
