The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.

The vote against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in Utah.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The notice confirmed that the future president was considered to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, the student asserted that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement categorically refuted that any person acting for George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the society on a related program broadcast.

The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
