No survivors are expected after a significant explosion at a Tennessee explosives factory on Friday that has resulted in 18 people unaccounted for.

Rescue personnel are not expecting to locate any of the missing alive, but they are not giving up hope, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis told a media update on Saturday.

"As we get into this, we discover it increasingly tragic than we thought initially," he commented.

Authorities have not determined what triggered the blast at the facility in Bucksnort, Tennessee - approximately 56 miles (90km) south-west of Nashville. The location is dedicated to the development, production, handling, and keeping of explosive materials.

Filmed evidence captured on the day of the incident revealed fires still burning, charred vehicles, and smoke rising from the razed building. Emergency responders stated remains was distributed in a half-mile perimeter around where the building had been located.

The firm which runs the facility has suspended its operations.

There was a previous fatal explosion at a unit in the same location in 2014.
