Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to Your World

The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it features the first new weapon introduced into the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it has the potential to revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.

"We knew initially that we aimed for a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," explained a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your allies on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack excellently designed for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a primary functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead adds. "The spear has two attacks: You have the quick stab, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you couch your lance and get greater injury [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for mounted duels."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she hints.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it needs to become an competitive event without delay.

Another key feature in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the nautilus shells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also conserve your air supply, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for oxygen.

The rest of the additions are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've pondered this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also bring in something for underwater," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] add variety to what you find underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross bodies of water while atop a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

In summary, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear on its own — and the pandemonium it invites — would have constituted a considerable upgrade. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
