Major Web Failure Hits Dozens Sites and Applications

A large-scale web outage has disrupted dozens sites and apps globally, and users reporting troubles getting online following issues at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The impacted apps encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-operated platforms such as its primary shopping website and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected as well as its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and additional accounts of difficulties reaching the the tax authority site on the start of the week. Also in the UK, many Ring users took to networks to complain their doorbells were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, reports of problems on individual platforms ran into the thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the problem began in the Atlantic coast of the US at Amazon Web Services, a division that offers crucial web backbone for numerous companies, who lease resources on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the world’s largest online services system.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the US (8am BST), officials reported “elevated problem frequencies and latencies” for the cloud services in a region on the eastern US of the US. The widespread consequence appeared to disrupt services globally, and the outage tracking website reporting outages with the same sites in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a rise in problems on that morning, including several cases situated in the state of Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the outage originated.
