2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a distinct vision.
The president noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
This announcement follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete message from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our players.
The trust in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
His management and experience in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having spent the recent years developing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all eager to persist seeing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.
David
Brinkman presently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. Then, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that shift every round. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or aim high, gamble everything, and trust your squad can secure victory? The choice is yours."
The game does not have an official release date or supported systems, but players can anticipate additional details as production progresses.
